Homes, design and facilities
Nad Al Sheba 1 is historically the part of Nad Al Sheba most closely associated with horse racing. The former Nad Al Sheba Racecourse stood here, and its history is central to the development of modern thoroughbred racing in Dubai.
In addition to horse racing, it is also a substantial modern residential district with schools, shops, mosques and parks.
The district is home to many royal compounds and palaces including Nad Al Sheba Palace, belonging to Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum. The royal association with Nad Al Sheba 1 isn't incidental. The old racecourse existed largely because of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's personal involvement in developing horse racing in Dubai. Flat races have been held here since 1981.
Nad Al Sheba Racecourse was Dubai's first purpose-built racecourse. It opened in 1992, eleven years after Dubai's first flat-racing meeting was held at a camel track in the Nad Al Sheba area.
The creation of the racecourse coincided with the foundation of Dubai Racing Club in 1992. Together, these developments transformed Dubai horse racing from relatively small meetings into an organised professional sport with increasing international participation.
The racecourse became internationally famous as the original home of the Dubai World Cup, first held in 1996 and was a major step in establishing Dubai and the UAE as a global centre for racing.
Nad Al Sheba Racecourse was eventually superseded by Meydan Racecourse. Meydan opened in 2010 and became the new headquarters of the Dubai World Cup, marking the end of Nad Al Sheba Racecourse's role as Dubai's principal racing venue.
Nad Al Sheba 1 has a more mixed character than Nad Al Sheba 2–4. It is made up of several quite different residential pockets rather than being one uniform neighbourhood. These include Nad Al Sheba Gardens, a large modern villa and townhouse development by Meraas; Meydan Heights, which is used exclusively for Emirates Airline employee accommodation; Polo Residences which comprises solely apartment buildings; and Grand Views, a gated community comprising large stand-alone villas.
In addition to horse racing, Nad Al Sheba 1 has a strong wider sporting identity centred on the Nad Al Sheba Sports Complex, which hosts the annual NAS Sports Tournament and has facilities used for training and community sport. The area also has extensive cycle routes.
Unlike Nad Al Sheba 2, 3 and 4, parts of Nad Al Sheba 1 are allocated as freehold where non-UAE nationals may own property.
